I’ve got a new article out in The Conversation today – “UK looks to military gap years to boost recruitment in the face of growing geopolitical tension“. This follows the UK’s Strategic Defence Review, published earlier this week. I was invited to comment and provide some context on the plan for a voluntary programme for over 18s, linked to my wider research on young people, military ethos and national service models. I’d have loved more space to talk about the wider generational divide related to national service, and young people’s views on an increasingly broken social contract, themes in my last book. You can read the full article for free here.
